Stagecraft Pathway

The Stagecraft program prepares individuals to apply artistic, technical and dramatic principles and techniques to the communication of dramatic information, ideas, moods, and feelings through technical theatre methods. The program includes instruction in set design, lighting design, sound effects, theatre acoustics, scene painting, property management, costume design, and technical direction and production and use of computer applications to support these functions.

Stagecraft students also develop leadership, social, civic, and career skills through their participation in the state-recognized Career and Technical Student Organization Thespians. The Stagecraft instructional program prepares students for entry-level employment, further training, and/or post-secondary education for these and other occupations: Art Teacher, Drama Teacher, Music Teacher, Postsecondary Teacher, Set and Exhibit Designers, Audio and Video Equipment Technicians.

Stagecraft 1 If you prefer to hide in the shadows, rather than stand in the spotlight, this is the class for you. Focusing on the skills you need to run tech for events in and out of schools, Fall Semester will include a tour of the facility, how to operate lights, sound, and spotlights, and how to hang objects and safely fly them onstage. In addition, there will be project based units such as special effects makeup and sewing. Spring Semester will focus on painting techniques, stage management, hand and power tools, and dramaturgy.
Stagecraft 2 Fall Semester will build on the skills of Stagecraft I, covering additional topics such as building doors, stairs, and revolving platforms, tying knots, and preparing for Regional and State Competition. Students will also complete the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Certification in this class. In Spring Semester, the focus will be on design and production, with students choosing their own play to create a production book and design portfolio for, and the opportunity for one designer to student direct an in-class production.
Stagecraft 3 With a college and career focus, the students of Stagecraft III spend class time building the sets for all productions at LWHS, operating lights and sound for events in the LWHS Auditorium, researching colleges and degrees (or business internships and certifications for employment) suitable for the students’ chosen career, and completing independent projects around the theatre. There are also internship opportunities available to Stagecraft III students with our industry partners.
